In the equine, bone fragments are common orthopedic problems that are often only resolved surgically. Dr. Rolfe Radcliffe, a large animal surgeon and professor, needed to show the anatomy of the palmar distal limb, and the palmar arthroscopic approach to the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint in order to remove a large axial osteochondral fragment in the horse.
The focus of this black and white line with tone artwork, published in Veterinary Surgery, was to show the location of the arthroscope and instrument portals. SMI also assisted Dr. Alan Nixon, a large animal surgeon and professor working with Dr. Radcliffe, to develop a similar illustration for his contribution to the textbook Diagnostic andSurgical Arthroscopy in the Horse.
